Human centered design is a strategy to the development of interactive systems, which aims to create systems useful and usable by focusing on the system users, their requirements, needs and with the application of human techniques, usability knowledge and ergonomics. This strategy improves efficiency and effectiveness, promotes user satisfaction, human well-being, sustainability and accessibility and counteracts adverse effects on human safety, health and performance. There is a significant body of human usability knowledge and ergonomics regarding how human centered design may be planned and used effectively. ISO 9241 200 series exists to avail this information to those who are responsible for the management of software and hardware design and other re-design processes to point out and plan timely and effective human centered design activities.
The user-centered strategy to design described in ISO 9241 supplements the design approaches of existing systems. Additionally, this can be integrated in strategies as diverse as rapid application development, object-oriented and waterfall.
This model describes processes for evaluating and specifying usability, safety and health. However, it does not focus on the processes that relate to the achievement. Additionally, it can be applied to design, specification, and assessment of embedded systems, software and hardware. Also, it can be applied for bespoke systems, generic systems and other systems that change consistently to meet the changes in the user business environment. Keep in mind that it must be customized for each of these applications.
This is the ability to process with the aim of achieving the required goals. However, it is important to note that this usage is different from military capability, human capability and operational capability. Understanding each of these capabilities in essential to avoid confusion of these alternative usages.
This is the system that supplements the system of interest during the life cycle states, but never contributes to its functionality directly. For instance, a production system will be required when a system enters a specific production stage during the life cycle. Keep in mind that each of these enabling systems has a unique life cycle.
This is the study of human limitations and capabilities, human interaction with environments and technologies and the application of the acquired knowledge to environments, products and processes. Also remember, that the word ergonomics was created from Greek words to mean “laws of work”.
This is the evaluation used and designed to enhance the object of evaluation, particularly during the development stages.
Human centered design
Strategy to design that is described by the active involvement of humans, duplications of design solutions, an understanding of task and user requirements and multi-disciplinary design.
